Planting Trees at the cemetery. Article below

On Saturday morning, May 16, 2009, several hardy souls met at the Rippey Cemetery to plant the trees that had been purchased with the $1000.00 grant from Trees Forever. The weather was not ideal, with the temperature in the low 40’s with wind gusts from 15 to 25 miles per hour from the north west.

Trustees, Roger Norgren, Mary Ann Hick took time, a couple weeks earlier, to go to the nursery to choose the trees, which were delivered around 8:30 a. m.

John Muir, (the hero of the day) furnished the tractor and post hole digger, which made the planting go much faster. Members of the Washington Winners 4-H Club, with their leader, Mark Kenan, along with some fathers of the kids, rounded out the help. The 4-H members involved in the planting were, Dylan Fouch, Katlin Gannon, Shawn Kenan, Harry Johnston, Cassidy McNichols, Eli Muir, and the fathers, Kevin Fouch, Bobby Muir, and Ned Johnston. Other community volunteers helping were Kyle Kenan and Kevin Hick. Colleen Norgren, furnished snacks and was kept busy caring for Isabella and Jack Norgren, who were visiting grandma and grandpa. The cold wind didn’t seem to bother them, but they are low to the ground!

Jean Borgeson helped as much as her "older body" would allow, but mostly took pictures. The group was sure glad when that last tree was put into the ground! Jean admitted it took the heating pad and a three hour nap to finally get warmed up. A big thank you to all these volunteers who helped complete this project.

And now the news...June 19, 2009

Sunday, June 7th was Recognition Sunday at the Rippey United Methodist Church.   Christian Education Coordinator, Mary Hick made several recognitions during the worship service, high school seniors, college graduates and Sunday School teachers.   High School graduates included Jessica Allen, Cassandra Bardole, Ashley Bebb, McKinsey Druivenga, Brock Lyons, Samantha Renze, Mallory Roberts and Nicholas Wilkening.   All were presented with a bible.  College graduates this year are: Justin Muir, Kara Norgren, Andy Ulrich and Andrew Bardole.  Special recognitions were given to two adult church members for service to their church: Jean Borgeson and Connie Neese.  A surprise recognition was given to Mary and Kevin Hick.

On May 31, Jean Borgeson attended the open house for her aunt Virginia Siglin, held in Legacy Point at Waukee.  The event was to honor her 90th birthday which was May 21 and it was hosted by her daughter Ann, from Hollis, New Hampshire and son, Bill and his wife Joni of Woodward, IA.  Others relatives attending were Bill and Joni's four girls and families, her niece, Elayne and Dean Bice, of Johnston, cousins, Belva Barnes, and Lorna Fogue and Lorna's children, Vicky Fogue and R. W. Fogue of Des Moines.  There was entertainment provided by Ann Siglin and Bill Siglin, accompanied by Elayne Bice. Jean sang with Ann on a  special song, "Sisters".  The family singers, including Virginia, closed the program with, "The Lord Bless You And Keep You", a long-time family favorite.  Virginia was pleasantly surprised by the approximately 90 people attending to share in this event.

LaVere and Beverly Derry accompanied by their daughter, Teri of Ames, spent a recent weekend in Glen Ellyn, IL. where they visited in the home of  Mike and Christine Derry, John and Luke.   A hi-light of the weekend was attending John and Luke's  baseball games.

The Ladies Aid of the Rippey UMC met Thursday, June 4 in Fellowship Hall.  Jan Friess was lesson leader, using selections from Helen Steiner Rice.    Velda DeMoss was hostess for the day.

Commencement was held at the Knapp Center at Drake University on May 26, 2009. The party was delayed until all of Kathy's siblings could attend. The six brothers and sisters are children of Karen Cain Peters and Dan Peters. They live from Georgia to Colorado with three who remained in Iowa. It was the first time in seven years the family had all been together so a very happy occasion. Grandmother Karen Peters of Fort Dodge was an honored guest.

On June 7, Matt and Stephanie Roberts, Mallory, Morgan and Marshall of Jefferson attended church with Phil and Toni Roberts at Rippey where their daughter, Mallory was one of the recipients of a bible given to EG grads.  Also receiving a bible that day was another granddaughter, Cassie Bardole.  Following the service the Roberts’ were dinner guests in the parental Phil Roberts home.

Toni Roberts attended the Bell Tower Parade with her daughter Lori Bardole and Cassie, Schyler and Gabe of Rippey.  Also attending were Wendy Burkett with daughters Josie, Addie and new infant Lily.  Wendy and Tony Burkett and family were visiting in the parental Mick Burkett home for the weekend.  Accompanying Wendy and girls was Connie Burkett with her other granddaughters, Quinn, Zoe and Libby as well as Susan Burkett and son Mason.  The group all sat together and enjoyed the parade very much (especially the candy)!  Later that afternoon Toni and Phil gathered at the Tim Bardole home for a belated 4th birthday party for Addie.  Other guests for the potluck BBQ were McKinsey, Boe, and Tanya Druivenga, friends of the Bardole’s.  After eating and visiting and taking turns holding Lily, the group gathered in the living room while Addie opened her gifts.  Addie’s favorite part was her “princess cake” with a Cinderella that was lit and of course all the icing she got to eat!  Regrets were sent by the Chris Roberts family and Matt Roberts family who were unable to attend and get to see their new niece, Lily.  Wendy and Tony and family stopped by the parental Roberts home for a brief visit on Sunday afternoon before leaving for their home in Lawrence KS.

Library News

A Book Discussion is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Thursday June 25 at the Rippey Library.   Several of the avid readers from Rippey and surrounding area will share some of their favorite “reads” with the group.  All are invited whether they share stories or just get ideas for a good book.  A reception will follow the discussion.

The Summer Reading Program continues at the Rippey Library with two sessions per week.  The attendance has been slight but Brenda has everyone involved in finding their “creative side” with chalk art, painting, and making collages from old magazines.  Even the Librarian, got to make a collage and tell what each picture meant to her. The group is working on their finale, a play to be performed at the Senior Citizens Apartments.  They all have been working hard on memorizing lines and creating the background art for the play.  Another creative project was writing stories or poems like the one listed below.  There’s still time to join the group as Brenda will be working on the musical score for the play and everyone can help!  Don’t miss out, come and be a part of this fun group!

Jan Friess, Kathy Jackson, Connie Neese and Velda DeMoss attend a Guest Day Brunch at the Community United Methodist Church in Ogden on Wednesday morning.
