And now, the news.......

April 4, 2008

The Rippey Lions Club met Thursday, March 20 at 7:00 pm in the Rippey United Methodist Church.  There were 10 members, two guests and speaker Pastor Gordon Moen of the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson.   Pastor Moen gave a very interesting presentation on the Habitat for Humanity program starting in Greene County.

Cooks serving a devious meal were Mary Hick, Brenda Muir, and Michelle Wilkening.   The next meeting will be the Father-Son Banquet on April 3 and the second meeting on April 17th will be the "Night In" supper served by Velda DeMoss, Colleen Anderson and Maralynn Rinker.

Josie and Addie Burkett of Lawrence KS split the week of March 15-23 between their grandparents Mick and Connie Burkett in Grand Junction and Phil and Toni Roberts in Rippey.  Their parents, Tony and Wendy Burkett were enjoying a week of skiing in Colorado with Tony’s brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Kelly Burkett of Des Moines.  Monday afternoon, Lindsay and Sarah Roberts stopped by to visit with their cousins and help Grandpa Phil baby-sit while Toni was at work.  Tuesday morning Lindsay helped again while the little girls enjoyed swimming at the Rec Center in Perry.  Lindsay was home all week for Spring Break from college.  Wednesday, Karen helped Grandpa again while the little girls got to inspect the farm and even tried climbing trees.  That evening Cassie and Gabe Bardole joined Karen in playing with their cousins while Toni and Phil went to choir practice.  All the cousins enjoyed playing and Grandma and Grandpa were very thankful for the youthful help!  In addition to Josie and Addie, Gunther, their family dog enjoyed a week long visit at the Roberts’.

Dale and Nancy Hanaman spent a week visiting their daughter and family, Sarah Pearson and her husband Benji, Steven, Elizabeth and Andrea. En route to their home in Superior, WI, they stopped in St. Paul, MN, on Palm Sunday to spend time with their son, Matthew and Adrianna and Adyara. They attended Sunday services at the Church of the Good Shepherd in St. Paul. While visiting in Superior, Dale and Nancy and extended family enjoyed the Children’s Museum and Transportation Museum at the Depot in Duluth, MN. Easter Sunday, Matthew and his girls joined the family in Superior for church and a family dinner.

Easter was a casual come and go affair on Sunday afternoon.  After a brief Easter egg (jelly bean eggs) hunt inside, a buffet luncheon of ham sandwiches and potato salad and relish was served.  Chris Roberts and Lori and Tim Bardole, Cassie, Schyler and Gabe all of Rippey came to eat and visit with Tony and Wendy Burkett, Josie and Addie before the Burketts’ returned home to Lawrence KS that afternoon.  Regrets were sent by the Matt Roberts’ family of Jefferson who were sick and by Brenda Roberts, Sarah, Geoff and Karen who were attending a baptismal dinner for Brenda’s nephew in Newton.

April 13 at 3:00 pm the Rippey United Methodist Church will host Sweet Harmony in concert.   The Iowa based quartet is made up of Rippey/Perry/Fairview's own Pastor Deb Parkison, her sister Pam Koso of Riverton, Gail Wallin of Clarinda and Jessica Yoakum, Deb's daughter, of Red Oak.   This groups harmony is matched by few.  Deb, Pam and Gail have been singing together for the last 26 years and Jessica joined them full time about 8 years ago.  Although their first love in gospel music, they also sing 30's, 40's and 50's music.  Sweet Harmony has performed in several states as well as on radio, and sung for groups of 16 to 6,000.  This is a concert you will not want to miss. Following the concert will be a free will supper of soup, sandwich, salad and dessert.   Come for a night of truly sweet harmony, fun and fellowship.

Local classmates in the class of 1955 have learned of the passing of their classmate, Verle Kirk in Sunnyside, WA.   He is survived by his wife, Elaine (Emmett) Kirk and three sons.    Services will be held in Washington.
