Welcome to Rippey sign

People's Bank

On Friday November 6th, the Friends of Rippey received a check from People’s Trust and Savings Bank, along with the deed for the old bank, and the storage building adjacent to the building. Accepting the check is Friends of Rippey President, Velda DeMoss, and Sharon Ulrich, the FOR Treasurer. Jamie Brant, Market President of Rippey/Grand Junction People’s Bank, and Teresa Hoyle, Rippey Branch manager were pleased to donate the buildings to the Friends of Rippey. The only stipulation is the building is to be used for public good, and may not be sold, or used as a bank. Plans will be to raze the buildings and clear the lots, making way for a new green space on Main Street or a new library building, dependent upon available funds. The building will not be torn down until 2010.

And now the news......

Rippey News

January 8, 2010

It is becoming a habit with the weather being the main newsmaker for Greene County and Iowa.  Locally, the church board meeting, choir practice, Ladies Aid and Lions Club were canceled on Wednesday and Thursday.

Phil and Toni Roberts had their traditional Christmas Eve supper of canned salmon and fried potatoes with part of the family attending--Chris and Brenda Roberts with Lindsay, Sarah, Geoff and Karen, and Lori and Tim Bardole with Cassie, Schyler and Gabe all of rural Rippey. Since the Rippey church service had been cancelled, they all enjoyed a leisurely meal and got a sneak preview of the service when Lindsay and Brenda sang “O Holy Night” while accompanied by Sarah on the piano. The Roberts’ “big Christmas” was on Dec 26 when the whole family gathered including Tony and Wendy Burkett of Winterset with their girls, Josie, Addie, and Lily and Matt and Stephanie Roberts of Jefferson with Mallory, Morgan, and Marshall. Also attending was Lauren King of Adaza, a friend of Schyler. The family had a choice of Phil’s potato soup or Stephanie’s vegetable soup and ham sandwiches. Phil has decided to "up the ante" next year as the “Irish offspring” went through more than 20 lbs of potatoes in two days time! After the meal the grandkids drew numbers and participated in a Chinese present exchange with much laughter and stealing of gifts. Next the adults took their turn and had as much fun as the kids! The little ones didn’t participate but had their own gifts from Grandma and Grandpa--Lily’s feet never even touched the ground with so many older cousins wanting to hold her. One of the “regular” gifts to the older grandkids was an order blank for a choice of pepperoni bread, cookies or Grandpa’s soup to take home or back to college. Thus this week has been baking week for Toni. They were so thankful to have all the family close and able to attend the festivities.

Holiday visitors with Dale and Nancy Hanaman were Sarah and Benji Pearson, Steven, Elizabeth and Andrea, Superior, WI, and Matthew Hanaman, Adrianna and Adyara, St. Paul, MN. The intrepid explorers spent much time playing in the snow and even constructed a snow house complete with underground tunnels. While the family was visiting, they celebrated Sarah’s birthday on Dec. 28th.

Sue Muir will be celebrating her birthday on January 15.  Cards may be sent to her home at 2441 U Ave, Rippey, IA  50235.

Toni Roberts, Rippey Librarian, will be hosting an Open House at the Library on Saturday, January, 16 for all library volunteers and the public.   All are welcome to attend this open house.

Gary and Mary Weaver joined Dean and Ellen Weaver of Boone, and Dale and Elaine Weaver, and Lori of Ottumwa for supper in Des Moines on Monday December 21st. They were joined by their cousin, Avis Patterson Van Wyck, formerly of Grand Junction, and her husband Francis at the pre Christmas gathering.

Beth DeMoss of Jefferson and Shawn, Lori and Velda DeMoss attended the visitation for Pat Rial of Fort Dodge on Monday evening.  Velda DeMoss and Jean Borgeson attended the funeral service on Tuesday morning.  Pat is survived by his wife, Norma, seven children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.   Shannon DeMoss of Rockwell City is one of the children.

Gary and Mary Weaver postponed their family Christmas plans because of the severe snowstorm, but were able to re-schedule this past weekend. David and Emily Weaver of Perry hosted his parents and sister and their niece and nephew, Lauryn and Nathan for supper on Wednesday December 30th. They were able to open their long awaited presents during the evening. On New Year’s Eve, David and Emily again hosted the family members for a traditional Christmas meal prepared by Emily and David. They watched the ISU-Minnesota football game, constantly alert during the shots of the crowd to see Matt  Basye who was staying with his parents and sister in Tempe.

The Sioux City Basye’s returned home on Friday afternoon.
